Gekidan Kaitaisha (Theatre of Deconstruction)
Rebecca has collaborated in Wales (2004, 2008), Germany (2004), Tokyo (2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012) and Poland (2007) with Gekidan Kaitaisha (Theatre of Deconstruction) (http://www.kaitaisha.com), she has trained extensively in Kaitaisha’s movement techniques and engages with an ongoing dialogue and collaborative relationship with the company.
Kaitaisha was founded in 1985 in Tokyo and have toured extensively worldwide. Directed by Shimizu Shinjin, working with choreographer Hino Hiruko, Kaitaisha are one of Japan's most acclaimed experimental theatre companies. Kaitaisha performances incorporate a rigorous physicality that is performed alongside video, sound and light to create stage works based on an acute criticism of contemporary society. The company produces a political ‘theatre of the body’ that confronts the burning issues of the contemporary world by addressing themes such as: terrorism, racism, gender prejudice, ideology, and political conflicts. Kaitaisha experiments in a political and philosophical re-interpretation of existing physical methods along with invention of new movements, and generates daring performances, which are bodily documents of truth about current times. Kaitaisha draws inspiration from the work of Tatsumi Hijikata (the founder of Butoh), but also from Martha Graham, the theatre of Tadeusz Kantor and the Japanese underground theatre (Angura engeki).
Rebecca initially collaborated with Kaitaisha through the international ‘Dream Regime’ project in 2004, which engaged in dialogue and collaboration with international artists, academics and performers. ‘Dream Regime’ considered hidden histories of cultural diversity in 20th Century Asia and the world in an age of continuing migration and globalisation, aiming to stimulate dialogues and reflect upon contemporary intercultural arts practice through practical workshops and collaboration.
